• The stabilized zirconia is used as a substrate, and a platinum electrode and an oxygen diffusion limiting hole are formed on one surface of the substrate, and a platinum heater is formed on the other surface.
• In order to obtain practical oxygen ion conductivity, the substrate is heated to several hundred °C by energizing the heater. When a voltage is applied between the electrodes, a current with oxygen ions as carriers flows through the substrate.
• Due to the oxygen diffusion limiting hole formed on the cathode, the amount of oxygen flowing into the cathode is limited, and a flat region (limit current) is observed in the current-voltage characteristics.
• Since the limiting current varies in proportion to the oxygen concentration, it is possible to determine the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere by measuring the limiting current.
